PURCHASE, N.Y. – The bats came to life once again Wednesday afternoon on a cold, rainy afternoon at Manhattanville Field as the Manhattanville College baseball team took down Lehman College 12-9 in a shortened non-conference battle.
The Valiants racked up six extra base hits on the afternoon to go with 11 total hits. Sophomore
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) reached base safely in all five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a double, two walks, and two runs scored. Senior
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) had another big offensive game, going 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBIs.
Senior
John Moschetti (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) did just enough to earn the win for the Valiants, grinding out 5.2 innings in the start, striking out two to improve to 2-1 this season. Junior
Billy Tempone (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) was outstanding in relief, earning the win after tossing 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out four while allowing just two hits.
It was a shaky start for Manhattanville Wednesday, giving up four runs in the top of the first, including a three-run home run from Chris Lopez to give the Lightning a 4-0 advantage early. The Valiants responded immediate however, pushing three runs across in the bottom half of the inning behind RBI doubles by
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and fellow senior
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland). After the Lightning added to their lead with a run in the second, the Valiants tacked on six runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead. After scoring two runs on a wild pitch, Lynch launched his fifth homerun of the season over the fence in left to clear the bases and give Manhattanville a 9-5 lead.
Lehman battled back, making it a one-run game in the sixth but Tempone stranded a runner on third with a strikeout to end the inning, and held the Lightning scoreless in their final two at bats. A bases loaded walk and a wild pitch gave the Valiants a three-run edge and Lehman never had a final chance to come back in the ninth as the game was called with one out in the bottom of the eighth for a combination of rain and darkness at Manhattanville Field, giving the Valiants the 12-9 victory.
The Valiants are back in action on Friday when they play host to DeSales University in MAC Freedom action for the single game of the three-game set with the Bulldogs beginning at 3:30 pm.
