DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Despite scoring 21 runs over two games Sunday, the Manhattanville College baseball team split the first two games of their three-game series with Delaware Valley University Sunday afternoon at Frank Wolfgang Field.
Sophomore
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) went 5-for-8 at the plate, launcing a two-run homerun and scoring two runs. Senior
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) launched a homerun as well, going 3-for-7 with three RBIs. Fellow senior
Joe Booker (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) continued his breakout season, going 2-for-6 on the day with three RBIs as well.
Game One
Manhattanville took advantage of a leadoff walk to the first batter of the game Sunday, driving home a run with a two-out double to right center from R. Lynch to plate freshman
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and make it 1-0 early. After two Aggie runs in the second, the Valiant bats came to life in the third, plating four runs behind a two-run homerun from Scoggins and RBIs from senior
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Booker to take a 5-2 lead.
Delaware Valley again responded in their at bat, pushing across their third and final run of the day as the Valiants kept them at bay the rest of the way in game one. Booker and Conklin added sacrifice flies in the team's final four at bats to plate the final two runs of the game and give them a 7-3 victory.
Junior
William Mohr (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) earned the win after tossing 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three. It is the first win of the season for Mohr despite leading the team with three saves on the year.
Game Two
It was an offensive battle in game two of the three-game series, with the two teams combining for 30 runs and 31 hits in the scheduled seven inning contest. For the second straight game, Manhattanville plated one run in the top of the first to take the lead, but the Aggies responded with five runs in their first two plate appearances to go up 5-1 through two innings. A six-run burst by the Valiants kicked off the offensive spark as the Valiants would go on to score at least one run in their final five at bats.
Manhattanville took advantage of three Delaware Valley errors to begin the scoring in the third, scoring four times on three fielding errors to level the scoring at 5-5. After a sacrifice fly from senior
Anthony Iannuzzi (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas), M. Lynch followed with an RBI single to put the Valiants up 7-5 but once again the lead was short lived when Delaware Valley plated five in the bottom half of the frame to retake the lead 10-7. In the top of the fourth, R. Lynch hammered his third homerun of the season to make it 10-8 but again the Aggies had a response in the bottom half of the frame, pushing across six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an eight-run lead, needing just nine outs to secure the victory.
The Valiants would show no quit however, rallying once again in the top of the fifth. Booker started the scoring with an RBI single down the right field line and the Valiants scored their second run of the inning on another Delaware Valley error to make it a 16-10 game. Junior
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) and Scoggins collected back-to-back hits to drive home two more and get within four runs before the side was retired. After scoring one run in the sixth, the Valiants came to the plate trailing by three with three outs to play. Gallagher doubled to left center with one out, and after a pop out, R. Lynch doubled to right center to make it a two-run game but that is as close as they could get as the Aggies closed out an exciting game to level the series at 1-1 with a 16-14 victory.
Manhattanville will host the Aggies on Tuesday in their third rubber match of the season when they look to move back above .500 in MAC Freedom play this season. The series determining matchup is slated for Tuesday afternoon at Manhattanville Field with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 pm.
