POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team dropped a 7-0 decision to SUNY Geneseo in the first round of the 2017 Betty Richey Tournament, held at Vassar College's Weinberg Field on Friday evening.
Giovanna Fasanello led all scorers with two goals and an assist, as her 13 shot attempts were more than the Valiants took as a team. Morgan Maley also scored twice for the Knights in the win.
Fasanello played a role in all three Geneseo goals as the team took a 3-0 lead into halftime. She scored twice in the span of 87 seconds midway through the half, and then assisted on a Julia Kim score with 2:20 remaining in the opening frame. The Knights then padded their stats with three goals in the final 10:35 of the game, including a score with no time left on the clock following a penalty corner.
Senior
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) did all she could to keep Manhattanville in the game, making 15 saves on 20 shots in the first 60:27 of action, but she was unable to hold back the potent Geneseo attack. The Knights finished the game with a 28-7 edge in shots and a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Manhattanville will take on Marywood College, 1-0 losers to Vassar in Friday's first game, in a consolation-round match tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
