Martinsson's Two Goals Pace Manhattanville Against Mount St. Mary

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y – Manhattanville College's men's soccer team earned a hard-fought victory over the Mount St. Mary College Knights in the consolation game of the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic Sunday afternoon, 3-2.

A day after being unable to find the net against Johns Hopkins, one of the nation's top defensive units, the Valiants (2-2) launched a strong offensive attack on Mount St. Mary (2-3), led by senior Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) and freshman Jon Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y./Pleasantville).

Martinsson scored twice in the first half, the first goal coming from six yards out off a give-and-go with junior Jack Balasiano (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) 16 minutes in. Six minutes later, off assists from Kyriakidis and Balsaiano, Martinsson's strike to the top left corner from the right side of the box gave Manhattanville a 2-0 lead.

Mount St Mary closed the deficit to one at the 38-minute mark when Joey Dolan beat Manhattanville sophomore goalkeeper Tim Carsting (Falun, Sweden/Soltorgsgymnasiet) on a penalty kick. Carsting was relieved two minutes later by freshman Danny Ayala (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), seeing his first action as a Valiant.

Just 84 seconds into the second half, senior Jeff Carreira (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), off a set piece, delivered a pass to the right side of the field that Kyriakidis knocked home past Mount St. Mary goalie Jakup Myrtja for his second goal of the year.

Joseph Sadofsky brought Mount St. Mary back within one at the 67-minute mark when he blasted a shot from outside the box to the right side of the net.

The Valiants would hold on from there, improving their record on the season to 2-2. The team will be back in action on Wednesday on the road against Wesleyan. They'll return to GoValiants.com Field for a September 20 match-up with St. Joseph's of Brooklyn.
