Balasiano's Blast Not Enough as Manhattanville Soccer Falls to Wesleyan 2-1

MIDDLETOWN, CT - Despite a six-save effort from freshman Danny Ayala (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) in his first career start, Manhatanville College's men's soccer team fell on the road at Wesleyan on Wednesday night, 2-1.

Trevor Devanney's header directly off Sam Serxner's throw-in two minutes in gave the Cardinals (3-0) an early 1-0 lead.  Manhattanville (2-3) junior Jack Balasiano (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) recorded his first goal of the season at the 23-minute mark with a shot in traffic past Wesleyan goalkeeper Brian Harnett, just the second goal conceded by Harnett this season.

A five-man substitution by Wesleyan in the 67th minute paid quick dividends as Garrett Hardesty headed home Lucas Kimball's pass off Alec Haas' corner kick in the 72nd minute to put Wesleyan back in front. The corner kick was preceded by an outstanding defensive effort from Manhattanville junior Michael Jean-Charles (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon), who stopped a James Schubauer shot from crossing the goal line after the ball found its way past Ayala.

The Valiants had chances late, but shots from freshman Pablo Bravo Olle (Barcelona, Spain/LFG Bon Soleil) and senior Jeff Santos (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) were both blocked, an 80thminute header from senior Ryan Trainor (North Salem, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) sailed wide right, and Wesleyan's defense held tough on three Manhattanville corner kicks over the final 12 minutes.

The Valiants will be back in action on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for a road contest with Drew. The team returns to GoValiants.com Field Wednesday, September 20 for a 7:00 battle with St. Joseph's of Brooklyn.
