Men's Soccer Strikes Early, Strikes Often in 6-0 Win Over St. Joseph's (Brooklyn)

PURCHASE, N.Y – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team dominated on both sides of the ball Wednesday night at GoValiants.com Field, posting their first shutout of the season, while five different players recorded at least one goal in a 6-0 victory over St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn).

Senior Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) struck first for the Valiants (3-4) in the fifth minute off a pass from sophomore Cristian Araujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto). The Swede controlled the ball just outside the box, and navigated around St. Joseph's (0-4-1) goalkeeper Alejandro Oliveros before burying his team-high fourth goal of the season in the back of the net.

Martinsson's night was far from over, as less than 10 minutes later, the forward gathered a loose ball on the right side of the box and knocked home a left-footed shot to give the Valiants a 2-0 lead.

That was the last of the scoring for the half, though not for lack of trying from Manhattanville, who garnered three corner kicks and forced seven saves from Oliveros in the final 30 minutes of the half.

Less than four minutes into the second half, Araujo, after twice being denied by Oliveros in the opening half, headed home the rebound off a free kick by senior Jeff Carreira (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) that hit off the left post.

Freshman Jon Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y./Pleasantville) joined the scoring frenzy in the 54th minute, burying a rebound from 12 yards out off a sliding attempt by Martinsson for his third goal of the season.

After leaving the game in the first half due to a facial injury, junior Jack Balasiano (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) returned in the second half and made it 5-0 in favor of the Valiants in the 61st minute off assists from junior Mateo Herron (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Mayor de los Andes) and freshman Pablo Bravo Olle (Barcelona, Spain/LFG Bon Soleil). Senior Jeff Santos (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) provided the final goal of the night in the 71st minute, a beautifully placed shot into the top left corner from the top of the box off a ground cross from classmate Ryan Trainor (North Salem, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic), his first goal of the season.

The Valiants ended the night with 19 shots on goal out of 31 total shots, both season-highs, while holding the Bears to just nine shots, the fewest allowed by the team this season.

Manhattanville will be back in action on Saturday on the road at 7:30 p.m. against NYU. The team will return to GoValiants.com Field Monday for a 7:00 p.m. affair with the Brooklyn College Bulldogs.
