Men's Soccer Suffers 2-0 Setback to Undefeated NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. –The Manhattanville College men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback Saturday night, falling on the road to undefeated NYU.

The Violets' Owen Smith headed home a Ricardo Mitrano corner kick in the 34th minute just inside the left post past Manhatanville sophomore goalkeeper Tim Carsting (Falun, Sweden/Soltorgsgymnasiet). Mitrano's night was far from over, as his penalty kick in the 54th-minute just inside the left post past a diving Carsting provided the Violets (5-0-1) some insurance.

The two teams traded scoring chances throughout the first half. The Violets' Robert Shellow had an open look from the top of the box in the fourth minute denied by Carsting. A well-placed long ball by Manhattanville (3-5) senior Christoffer Staahl (Lulea, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) in the fifth minute set-up classmate Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) behind the NYU defense. Martinsson then delivered a cross to freshman Jon Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y./Pleasantville) inside the box, but Kyriakidis could not put home either of his two shots past NYU goalie Grant Engel. Manhattanville senior Ryan Trainor (North Salem, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) had two headers just off the mark on corner kicks from classmate Jeff Carreira (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), the second header hitting off the crossbar in the 22nd minute. NYU's Richie Rambarran found space just outside the box on a counter attack in the 29th minute, but Carsting grabbed the long attempt.

Manhattanville pressed the action early in the second half with four shots in the first five minutes, before NYU turned up the defensive pressure, holding the Valiants to just three shots over the final 40 minutes. The Valiants finished the match with 13 shots, eight of them on goal, each of them a season-high or tied for a season-high allowed by an NYU defense that has conceded just three goals all season.

The Valiants return to GoValiants.com Field on Monday at 7:00 p.m. against Brooklyn College.
