THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Junior
Joanna Karp (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) scored two goals to lead a 34-shot attack as the Manhattanville College women's soccer team got back on the winning track with a dominating 6-1 victory over Maritime (N.Y.) College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field.
Five players scored and seven players recorded a point in the win for Manhattanville (2-3-1), which outshot Maritime 34-5 on the afternoon. Karp led the way with a match-high five points, scoring twice in a game for the first time in her career and also adding an assist. Classmate
Lauren Vallarelli (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) came off the bench to register a career-best four points, scoring once and adding a pair of assists.
Sophomore
Samira Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Kungsholmens Gymnasium) chipped in a goal and an assist, while freshmen
Bri Altamuro (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Eastern Christian) and
Jess Roman (Weston, Fla./NSU University School) both scored as well for the visitors.
After the Valiants controlled play for the first six minutes, Maritime had its first and only sustained pressure of the afternoon soon after, with Jessica Yee having a pair of chances blocked before MacKenzie Fabiani found the net from long distance to put the home team up at the 7:34 mark.
But Manhattanville did not allow another shot for the remainder of the half and finally found itself on the other end of the field as well. Roman knotted the score less than five minutes later with another shot from long range for her second goal of the year. The Valiants earned their first lead in the 30th minute, when Karp netted her first of the game from Vallarelli and freshman
Ashley Pacheco (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Pelham Prep).
The visitors added one more just before the end of the half, with Vallarelli taking a through ball from Davis and beating keeper Cammie Havens with just 16 seconds left on the clock. At the half, Manhattanville had a 20-3 advantage in shots.
Despite having numerous quality chances, including a Vallarelli shot off the post in the 63rd minute, Manhattanville did not increase its lead until the final second of the 81st minute, when Altamuro scored her first collegiate goal from classmate
Bella Fotino (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central), who picked up her first collegiate point with the assist.
Davis capped the scoring in the 84th minute, as a buildup from Karp and a nice pass from Vallarelli sprung the sophomore for a breakaway chance that she converted for her second goal of the year.
Sophomore
Bella Beltrami (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) made one save to pick up her second win of the year, while Havens turned aside 11 shots in a very busy day between the posts for the home team.
Manhattanville will return to the field on Tuesday, when the Valiants host Lehman College in their final non-conference tuneup before the start of MAC Freedom play beginning at 5 p.m.
