Boot’s Overtime Winner Lifts Field Hockey Over Ramapo

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team beat the heat and the Ramapo College Roadrunners at GoValiants.Com Field Wednesday afternoon, winning 2-1 in overtime.

Sophomore Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College) scored the game-winner for the Valiants (2-7) just 78 seconds into the extra session, carrying the ball across the field towards the right post, before firing a shot back inside the left post by Ramapo (4-5) goalkeeper Emily Wisneski for her second goal of the season.

The Valiants held offensive advantages in several categories, outshooting the Roadrunners 21-8 (13 to five in shots on goal) and holding a 14-8 edge in penalty corners, but both teams were held scoreless until just after the 50-minute mark. Manhattanville junior Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y./Rye) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season off a pass from Boot following a splendid individual effort from Boot to create space for herself up the right side of the field, leading to the cross to Antinozzi.

Antinozzi's goal stood for eight minutes, until Ramapo's Victoria Ewanis and Lauren Berry's two-person game off a Melissa Choka corner led to Ewanis' fourth goal of the season, squaring the match at one. Both Boot and Antinozzi had opportunities in the final 10 minutes, as did sophomore Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va./Granby), but Wisneski saved Boot and Antinozzi's opportunities, and Thomas' blast sailed just wide. Once the 7-on-7 extra session started, Boot quickly made the most of the additional open space on the field, controlling the ball in the offensive zone, and burying her shot past Wisneski.

Freshman goalkeeper Elaina Nacinovich (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), making her first career start for the Valiants, picked up the win, making four saves along the way. The Valiants return to MAC Freedom play this Saturday on GoValiants.com Field at 5:00 p.m. against Misericordia, where they'll look to get to .500 in-conference following their 3-2 OT loss at King's (Pa.) last Friday.
