Field Hockey Suffers 3-0 Setback to Misericordia

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville College field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to Misericordia University Saturday evening in the team's first home conference match of the season.

Misericordia (3-7, 1-1 MAC Freedom) ended the match with three players taking more shots than the Valiants did as a team. Manhattanville (2-8, 0-2 MAC Freedom) senior goalkeeper Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) finished with eight saves, one below her season average.

Haley Gruber and Colby Eldridge each played a role in two Misericordia goals, Gruber scoring twice and Eldridge assisting twice; the two teamed up 14 minutes into the match, as Gruber found room near the right post and knocked one home past Halloran. In the second half, at the 57-minute mark, Eldridge earned her second assist off a penalty corner, finding Kailey Vogl, the corner-taker just outside the left post, where Vogl put away her third goal of the season. Just over four minutes later, Kortney McEwen's pass across the box left-to-right managed to find its way almost untouched through five or six sticks to Gruber, who beat Halloran inside the right post for the final goal of the night. The Cougars finished the match with a 20-3 advantage in shots and 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

The Valiants return to action on the road in a non-conference affair with Western Connecticut State University Wednesday night. The team returns home, and to conference play, next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Delaware Valley in the Play 4 The Cure Game.
