Near-Identical Late Goals Doom Women’s Soccer in 4-3 Loss

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's soccer team seemed headed for a victory in their 2017 MAC Freedom Conference opener against Eastern University Saturday afternoon until two headers in 2:09 from Amy Radcliffe turned the game around and gave the Eagles a 4-3 win.

Courtney Davis' two well-placed corner kicks from the right found Radcliffe in the 83rd minute and 85th minute, respectively of the back-and-forth battle that included two ties and two lead changes in the final 25 minutes alone.

Nicole Weenink struck first for the Eagles (4-3-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) less than 10 minutes in when the speedster tracked down a long Katy Laurie pass up the left sideline, and beat Manhattanville's sophomore goalkeeper Bella Beltrami (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) just inside the post. Manhattanville (3-4-1, 0-1 MAC Freedom) freshman Jess Roman (Weston, Fla./NSU University School) squared the match in the 23rd minute, with a 25-yard strike to the top corner for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Both team's defenses held the rest of the half, with just four shots total allowed over the final 20 minutes of the half, one of those on goal.

Caroline Lozzi re-gained the lead for Eastern in the 53rd minute with a shot from mid-box that ricocheted off multiple Manhattanville bodies and across the goal line just inside the right post. A well-struck free kick at midfield from junior Dany Swidler (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) in the 66th minute created an opportunity for classmate Lauren Vallarelli (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), who got just enough on the ball to prevent a goal line clear from Eastern for the equalizer. Roman added her fifth goal of the season and second of the match just over two minutes later, bending a corner kick to the near post, where a mishandle from Eastern goalie Adrianna Rowlands gave Manhattanville their first lead. The Valiants led into the final 10 minutes of the match, before Davis and Radcliffe struck twice.

The Valiants return to conference action next Saturday at King's (Pa.) and return to GoValiants.com Field Tuesday, October 10 for a 5:00 p.m. match with DeSales.
