RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's hockey team dominated play for large portions of the game, but the Valiants could not hold a two-goal third-period lead in settling for a 4-4 (OT) tie with Elmira College in United Collegiate Hockey Conference action on Friday night at Playland Ice Casino.
Four different players scored for Manhattanville (8-6-4, 5-3-1 UCHC), which moved into a four-way tie for second in the UCHC standings with the tie. Senior co-captain
Eric Berglund (Sollentuna, Sweden/Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL)) tied for the team lead with two points on a goal and an assist, while junior
Jared Martin (Fort Qu'Appelle, Sask./Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) and freshman
Taylor Bommarito (Sterling Heights, Mich./Charlotte Rush (USPHL)) both had two assists for the Valiants.
The Valiants twice built up two-goal leads on the night, but the home team was unable to hold them. Senior assistant captain
Thimmy Garbenius (Nykvarn, Sweden/Sodertalje SK (SWE)) opened the scoring with 4:28 left in the first period, as his shot from the point deflected in off an Elmira skate for his second goal of the year.
Manhattanville dominated play in the second period, outshooting Elmira (8-8-2, 3-4-2 UCHC) by a 23-8 margin, as the Valiants scored three times to take a 4-2 lead into the final frame. Berglund put the Valiants up 2-1 with a shorthanded goal at 9:34 of the period, taking a feed from junior assistant captain
Casper Dyrssen (Stockholm, Sweden/Northern Cyclones (EHL)) and beating netminder Jake Sabourin. Sophomore
Kenny McLean (New Rochelle, N.Y./New York Bobcats (EHL)) gave the home team a 3-1 lead 4:08 later with his second of the year.
After Elmira scored a power-play goal to get back within one, senior
Kevin Loppatto (Plano, Texas/Springfield Pics (USPHL)) again regained the Valiants' two-goal edge with his third of the year from Martin and Bommarito at 17:44 of the middle frame. Manhattanville outshot Elmira 34-14 over the first two periods.
The third period did not go the home team's way, however, as Elmira scored twice to even the score. Nick Ford scored his 16th goal of the year to get the visitors back within one at the 5:06 mark, followed by Matthew Cuce netting his second of the night with 7:13 remaining in regulation.
Manhattanville finished the night with a 44-25 edge in shots. Junior
Tyler Feaver (Whitby, Ont./Whitby Fury (OJHL)) made 21 saves in the tie, while Sabourin turned aside 40 shots to keep his team in the game.
Manhattanville will return to the ice next Saturday, when the Valiants continue UCHC play at Neumann University at 7 p.m.
