Nine-Goal Second Period Propels Women’s Hockey to 12-2 Win in UCHC/MAC Play

PITTSTON, Pa. The Manhattanville College women's hockey team scored seven unanswered goals in a 13:16 stretch as part of a nine-goal second period against King's (Pa.) College Saturday afternoon during a 12-2 win in UCHC/MAC action.

The nine-goal outburst from Manhattanville (8-7-1, 5-2-0 UCHC, 3-0 MAC) eclipsed the team's total in any entire game this season and marked the most goals in a single period since a nine-goal first period against Plymouth State in January of 2010. The team's 12 goals are also the most in a game since scoring 17 against PSU in 2010 and tied for 20th on the school's single-game scoring list.

Senior Cassie Kent (Lake Placid, NY/Northwood School), entering the game without a goal scored this season, recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Valiant attack. Sophomore Ali Howard (Rye, N.Y./Rye High School), junior Morgan Wilm (West Chester, Pa./Millbrook School), and seniors Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./The Kent School) and Kristi Peters (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) all added two goals apiece in the victory, while sophomore Janet Xu (Edmonton, Alta./Ontario Hockey Academy) added her first goal of the season as well for the visitors.

Stys added two assists as well for four points, tied for the game-high with classmate Karly Kapur (Sparta, N.J./N.J. Colonials), who set a new career-high with four assists. Sophomore Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride) added a career-high three assists for the Valiants, who received multi-point efforts from 10 different skaters.

Kent struck first for the Valiants just 53 seconds in, while Gracen Mahoney scored for King's (0-14-1, 0-8-1, 0-4-1) just under five minutes later to tie the game. Despite a 17-0 shot advantage for Manhattanville the rest of the period, the game remained 1-all heading to the second period.

After Wilm and Xu both scored in the first 2:30 of the second period, Mahoney answered with her second of the game to trim the lead to 3-2. From there, Kent added her second of the game, Peters scored two straight, Howard scored two goals in 28 seconds, Stys added her first of the game, and Wilm added the final goal of the period at 18:16, giving the Valiants a 10-2 lead after 40 minutes of action.

In the third period, Stys added her second of the game, and Kent, with just seven seconds left in the contest, completed her hat trick, the fourth for a Valiant this season, joining Kapur, fellow senior Sarah Sinning (Southold, N.Y./National Sports Academy), and junior Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Northwood School).

The Valiants wrap up their season series with King's tomorrow with puck drop slated for 1:00 p.m.
