Women's Hockey Rallies Late, but Falls in Overtime to William Smith

GENEVA, NY – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team rallied late to tie the William Smith Herons, but eventually fell in overtime Saturday night, dropping a 2-1 contest in UCHC play at The Cooler.

Senior Jennifer Machin (Brunswick, Maine/Portland Jr. Pirates) scored for Manhattanville (9-8-1, 6-3 UCHC) at 19:55 of the 3rd period after William Smith (12-4-3, 8-1-2 UCHC) goalie Maggie Salmon stopped the first 40 Valiants' shots, but Maura Mulligan struck for the Herons at 3:33 of overtime for the win.

Catherine Linehan scored first for William Smith at 14:15 of the first period, the only goal allowed in an opening 20 minutes that featured seven shots apiece from both Manhattanville and William Smith.

Despite a 19-9 shot advantage for the Valiants in the second period, Salmon and Manhattanville junior goalie Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) kept all 28 shots out of their respective nets as the Herons carried their 1-0 lead to the final period.

Manhattanville threw 13 more shots on Salmon through the first 19+ minutes of the final period, but came up empty on each before Machin scored off the rebound of her initial shot saved by Salmon.

In overtime, after a Manhattanville penalty, the Herons won the faceoff in their offensive zone, maintained possession, and bided their time before Mulligan beat Pijaca, who finished with 33 saves.

The two teams are back in action from The Cooler tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
