WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team continued its early season success with a 93-38 victory in the Valiants' MAC Freedom opener against Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.
Manhattanville (9-1, 1-0 MAC Freedom), which entered the game ranked in the top three in the nation in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, led wire-to-wire and extended its winning streak to eight games. The team's 9-1 record sets a new mark for the best 10-game start in program history, surpassing both the 1975-76 and 1982-83 teams that started 8-1.
The 93 points scored are the most by a Valiant team since scoring 99 in a double-overtime loss to William Paterson University on November 15, 2011 and the most scored in regulation since February 11, 1989 against Hunter College.
Eleven different players scored for the Valiants, led by a career-high 26 points from freshman
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East). Sophomore
Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) added 15 points on a perfect 7-for-7 performance from the field, and
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) reached double figures for the ninth straight game, adding 10. Wilkes (3-8, 0-2 MAC Freedom) was led by Vanessa Whitecavage and Amber Grohowski, who scored seven and six points, respectively.
Manhattanville started the game on a 21-0 run and led 27-4 at the end of the first quarter. Wilkes went 0-for-11 from the field in the opening 10 minutes, the second straight game Manhattanville held the opposition without a field goal in the opening quarter, after Western Connecticut went 0-for-18 on Monday.
The Valiants led 43-13 at halftime, with Coutu matching the Colonels' output by herself. Manhattanville maintained that 30-point cushion the entire second half, extending its lead to 62 points in the fourth quarter.
Senior
Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) and freshman
Jykayla Elting (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had nine points apiece; Darnell added a game-high nine rebounds while Elting added three of Manhattanville's 15 steals.
The Valiants hit the road on Monday for a non-conference matchup against John Jay College, before returning to MAC Freedom action Wednesday at home against DeSales at 8:00 p.m.
