RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's hockey team scored the first four goals of the game on the way to a 4-1 victory over SUNY Cortland in non-conference action at Playland Ice Casino on Tuesday night.
Four different players recorded goals for Manhattanville (8-4-3), which extended its unbeaten streak to six games dating back to the end of 2017.
Taylor Bommarito (Sterling Heights, Mich./Charlotte Rush (USPHL)) picked up a game-high two points with a goal and an assist, while senior co-captain
Thimmy Garbenius (Nykvarn, Sweden/Sodertalje SK (SWE)), junior
Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ont./Oakville Blades (OJHL)) and freshman
Keegan Davis (Boulder, Colo./Connecticut Oilers (EHL)) all scored as well for the home team.
Davis opened the scoring just 73 seconds into the game with the first goal of his collegiate career, taking a feed from Bommarito and stuffing the puck past Cortland (5-9-0) netminder Drew Weigman. The Valiant lead doubled on the power play later in the frame, when Garbenius one-timed a pass from senior
Kevin Loppatto (Plano, Texas/Springfield Pics (USPHL)) into the back of the net for his first goal of the year.
Manhattanville struck for two more goals in the second period to help put the game away. Lippa scored his team-leading ninth of the year from sophomore
Kenny McLean (New Rochelle, N.Y./New York Bobcats (EHL)) at the 2:14 mark, and Bommarito found the net on a 4-on-3 man advantage with 6:34 remaining in the stanza.
Junior
Tyler Feaver (Whitby, Ont./Whitby Fury (OJHL)) had another excellent showing between the pipes for Manhattanville, making 25 saves. His bid for a shutout was spoiled by a Dan Broderick breakaway goal with 7:11 to go while the teams skated 4-on-4.
The Valiant special teams made major contributions to the win, as the home team scored twice on the man advantage and also held the Red Dragons scoreless on six man-up opportunities. The Valiants finished the night with a 35-26 edge in shots.
Manhattanville will return to the ice on Friday, when the Valiants head back on the road to take on Williams College in non-conference action starting at 7 p.m.
