Field Hockey Knocks Off Western Connecticut State Behind Timely Offense and Defense

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A multitude of Manhattanville College field hockey players contributed to the scoresheet offensively and defensively Thursday Oct. 11 as the Valiants won their third straight match, besting the Western Connecticut State University Colonials 4-2 in a non-conference affair on a rain-filled night at GoValiants.com Field.

On the offensive side of the ball, senior Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y./Rye) scored two goals for the second time in the last three matches, junior Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College) added a goal and two assists and freshman Juliette Eijssen (Eindhoven, Netherlands/Luzac Eindhoven) scored her first collegiate goal. On defense, freshman Raquel Brown (Claymont, Del./Brandywine), sophomore Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) and senior Brooke Hadgraft (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) all recorded a defensive save while freshman goalkeeper Zoe Fillebrown (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) stopped 10 more for Manhattanville (5-7).

Amanda Spano scored the first goal of the match for Western Connecticut (8-6) at 30:27, deflecting an initial shot from Morgan Matthews past Fillebrown. Eijssen answered less than four minutes later when she took a pass across the top of the circle from Boot and fired it past a diving Neve Manion, the Colonials' goalkeeper. The score remained tied at one at the half.

At 42:38, Antinozzi scored her first goal of the match off an assist from junior Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va./Granby), utilizing excellent body control and positioning to win a 50/50 ball at the top of the box before taking the shot. Western Connecticut's Lili Dickey tied the match at two on a penalty stroke at 53:08, but Boot gave the Valiants a 3-2 lead three and a half minutes later off a Lexi Crites (Middleboro, Mass./Kents Hill School) penalty corner after she received the entry pass, dribbled around a Colonial defender and scored.

After Fillebrown made two more saves and a third Western Connecticut shot hit the post, a long outlet pass from Boot created a breakaway opportunity for Antinozzi, who iced the game for Manhattanville with her second goal at 67:10.

Manhattanville returns to GoValiants.com Field on Saturday Oct. 13 for a 6 p.m. MAC Freedom affair with the King's College (Pa.) Monarchs in the 2018 Play 4 The Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
