PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior
Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College) and sophomore
Arnise King (Wilmington, Del./Concord) continued their recent offensive success, but Kelsey Gabriele's hat trick was just enough for King's College (Pa.) as the Manhattanville College field hockey team fell in double overtime to the Monarchs 3-2 on Saturday Oct. 13 in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom affair at GoValiants.com Field.
One year after needing 3:12 of extra time to break a 2-2 tie at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre, the two teams battled for 18:57 of extra time on Saturday before Gabriele's hat trick-completing goal won the match for King's (8-8, 3-1 MACF).
Boot scored first for Manhattanville (5-8, 1-3 MACF) at 6:07 off a penalty corner from classmate
Maisey Kettlewood (Nottingham, N.H./Dover), firing a hard, backhanded shot past King's goalkeeper Brianne Maluda. After a series of mostly-blocked shots from both teams, Gabriele scored her first of the day at 25:59, squaring the match at one.
The score remained tied at one deep into second-half action until Boot and King won a scramble for a loose ball led to a Boot-to-King connection at 63:44, putting Manhattanville back up by one. King's score marked her third straight MAC Freedom match with a goal, while Boot's assist gave her a fourth straight match with at least one goal AND one assist.
Less than three minutes later, Gabriele again tied the match on a penalty stroke goal, beating sophomore goalkeeper
Elaina Nacinovich (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), who made numerous spectacular saves throughout the match, finishing with a career-high 12 stops.
Two yellow cards forced Manhattanville to start the first overtime down two players for the first 80 seconds, but the Valiant defense held as the King's offense forced four of Nacinovich's 12 saves in a 6:19 span of the first extra session. With time winding down in the second overtime, Gabriele ended the game with a one-time shot off a penalty corner.
Saturday's match was the 2018 installment of Play 4 The Cure for Manhattanville, who raised more than $3,000 from an initial goal of $2,500, pushing the total raised by the program since 2015 to more than $7,200. The Valiants are back in action tomorrow afternoon, Sunday Oct. 14, when the team travels to Allentown, Pa. for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match with the Cedar Crest College Falcons.
