ELIZABETHTOWN, PA. -- The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team took part in a tri-match today, Saturday, Oct. 13. The Valiants began against McDaniel College in the early afternoon before subsequently taking on host Elizabethtown College.
Manhattanville (7-10) dropped the first set to the Green Terror (15-5) but came back strong to win the second and even things up at one set apiece. Things went back and forth until the score was knotted 8-8. Following three McDaniel attack errors and a service ace from freshman setter
Sarah Camarena (Los Angeles, Calif./Sacred Heart (H.S.)), the Valiants jumped out to a 12-8 lead, forcing a Green Terror timeout. Manhattanville maintained control for the remainder of the set to square the match score. Unfortunately McDaniel took the final two sets and won the match 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18).
Senior hitter
Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville)Â finished with another double-double, her fourth straight, by recording a team-high 11 kills and adding 11 digs. Sophomore libero
Monica Lopez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) led all players with a match-best 24 digs.
In the second match of the afternoon, the Valiants took on Elizabethtown (16-13). The Blue Jays took 13 of the first 15 points of the match before Manhattanville went on a run of their own by winning six of seven points later in the set, but it was not enough, as the home team took the first set.
The second featured a similar trend, as Elizabethtown got out to a fast start by winning 15 of the first 17 points of the set. The Valiants put together a stretch later in the set by winning seven out of nine points, but again were unable to close the gap and fell down 2-0. The Blue Jays again started strong in the third set, and again were able to hold the lead and close out the match 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-15).
LiVolsi again led the Valiants with 11 kills and Lopez once again notched a match high in digs, this time with 17.
Manhattanville looks to get back in the win column Tuesday, Oct. 16, when the squad travels to Eastern University for a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom matchup with the Eagles. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
