PURCHASE, N.Y. — The Manhattanville women's soccer team dropped their second Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest of the 2018 season, suffering a tough 2-1 double overtime defeat to Delaware Valley on Saturday, Oct. 6 at GoValiants.com Field.
Manhattanville (2-8-0, 0-2 MACF) sophomore forward
Ashley Pacheco (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Pelham Prep) scored for the second time in three games for the Valiants, and freshman goalkeeper
Alexa Pyatsky (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) made five saves for the home team.
The game remained scoreless through the first 80 minutes of play, but the offense started to pick up for both teams in the games final minutes. Delaware Valley (4-7-0, 1-1 MACF) got on the board first in the 82nd minute, when junior defender Erin Myers scored on a shot from the middle of the box, receiving a pass from senior midfielder Samantha Greim and put it past Pyatsky to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead late in the match.
The Valiants would answer back in dramatic fashion in the final moments of regulation, when in the 90th minute, a scramble in front of the net lead to Pacheco putting the tying goal past Delaware Valley sophomore goalkeeper Haley Young. The play was initially ruled no goal, but after a discussion by the officials, it was determined that the ball had indeed crossed the line and resulted in the game being tied at 1-1.
Neither team was able to score the winning goal in the first overtime, but in the second extra period, a foul on Manhattanville led to a free kick for the Aggies. Sophomore defender Sarah Young took the free kick from 25 yards out, and was able to put the ball past a diving Pyatsky to give Delaware Valley the 2-1 victory.
The Valiants return to action Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Center Valley, Pa., to take on DeSales University in another MAC Freedom matchup with a scheduled 4:00 p.m. start time.
