WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Senior
Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) recorded another 30-save game, but Avery Dunn scored a shorthanded goal with just over 90 seconds to play for the Williams College Ephs as the Manhattanville College women's hockey team fell 3-1 on the road Sunday, Dec. 9 from Lansing Chapman Rink.
24 hours after stopping 35 shots against the Connecticut College Camels, Pijaca stopped 30 of 33 shots taken by the Ephs, but Williams held the high-powered Manhattanville (7-2-1) offense to just 17 shots, 16 of which were stopped by goalie Chloe Heiting. Junior
Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery) scored a goal for the sixth time in the last seven games, but Williams (6-2-1) got a full-strength goal from Brianna Hill and a power play goal from Mia Carroll in addition to Dunn's short-hander.
Williams outshot Manhattanville 12-3 in the opening period, but Pijaca stopped all 12, including three shots each from Amanda Reisman and Meghan Halloran, keeping Williams off the board. Pijaca stopped another seven in the second period before Hill opened the scoring at 9:26.
The Valiants committed just three penalties on the afternoon, but Carroll made them pay for one of them when she made it 2-0 Ephs at 8:46 of the third period. Sabia halved the lead at 12:00 with her team-high 11th goal of the year off an assist from senior
Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Northwood School).
On a late-game power play, juniors
Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride (JWHL)) and
Ali Howard (Rye, N.Y./Rye) each took two shots, but Heiting stopped them all to keep Williams in front, and Dunn scored the insurance goal just over 30 seconds later. Mensi, Howard, and Pellowitz each finished with three shots to lead the Manhattanville offensive charge.
The Valiants will enjoy a near month-long break from game action before returning to the ice WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational hosted by Castleton University just after the new year. Manhattanville will face the Endicott College Gulls on Saturday Jan. 5, 2019 at 4 p.m.
