PINE VALLEY, NY - The nationally-ranked Soaring Eagles of Elmira College proved to be too powerful for the Manhattanville College women's ice hockey team as the Valiants fell 6-0 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Manhattanville (9-12-2, 6-7-1 UCHC) dropped to the sixth and final playoff spot in the UCHC standings following Utica's victory over Lebanon Valley, while Elmira (19-2-2, 13-0-1 UCHC) opened up a four point edge over William Smith for first place in the conference.
Junior goalie
Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) stopped 33 shots while Kelcey Crawford stopped all 13 of Manhattanville's attempts. Six different players scored for Elmira, who broke the game open with four goals in the second period, less than a day after Manhattanville took the Soaring Eagles down to the wire in a 3-2 Elmira win last night.
Katie Granato started the scoring at 11:51 of the opening period, the only goal Pijaca allowed, while stopping nine shots more, in the first 20 minutes. Tristen Tolan scored at 4:13 of the second period to put Elmira up 2-0. After Crawford stopped seven Manhattanville shots and Pijaca added five more saves, Shannon Strawinski and Meghan Fonfara scored at 14:00 and 14:17 for Elmira, who added its fourth goal of the period at 18:00 when Sarah Hughson converted on the power play. L. Lippiatt Durnell scored the final goal of the night at 16:17 of the third period.
The Valiants close out the regular season next weekend at Playland Ice Casino with a UCHC/MAC series against Stevenson, a potential preview of a first round UCHC Tournament matchup. Puck drop for the series opener is Friday at 7:00 p.m.
