Alvernia Pulls Away From Baseball in Late Innings

READING, PA – Five runs over the sixth and seventh innings by Alvernia University Thursday afternoon broke open a one-run game and the Manhattanville College baseball team dropped a 10-5 non-conference affair at Angelica Park.

Senior Austin Pollack (Harrison, N.Y./), junior Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun), and sophomores Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) each had two hits for Manhattanville (2-5). Sophomore Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) added his first home run of the season, joining Pollack, Lynch, and Scoggins in the RBI department. Dillon Dunne went 4-for-4 with three RBI's for Alvernia (8-3), who got at least one hit from every starter.

Manhattanville came to bat in the top of the fourth down 4-0, courtesy of a three-run third inning from the Wolves, and quickly went to work chipping away at the deficit. Iannarilli and freshman Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) started the inning with consecutive base hits. Junior Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) then reached on an error, loading the bases with no outs. After a strikeout and a pop up, Lynch singled to left, moving everybody up a base, and Scoggins followed with a two-run single to bring Manhattanville within a run. Scoggins and Lynch pulled off a double steal, but were stranded there to end the inning.

The teams traded runs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, with Merrill's second career four-bagger answering Mike Cirilli's RBI single. In the bottom of the sixth, Colin Rieger's two-run homer capped a three-run frame, and three-straight two out hits led to two more runs in the seventh for the Wolves.

Pollack drove home senior Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Elementary) in the top of the eighth for the game's final run. Freshman Christian Cefaloni (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) struck out one in a hitless bottom of the eighth in his first appearance as a Valiant.

Manhattanville kicks off MAC Freedom play Saturday with a doubleheader against King's (Pa.) in Wilkes-Barre. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Follow all the action at govaliants.com/live.
