WILKES-BARRE, PA – Senior
Austin Pollack (Harrison, N.Y./) scored the go-ahead run in a 6-run seventh inning for the Manhattanville College baseball team in an 11-5 win over King's (Pa.) Sunday afternoon in Game 2 of a MAC Freedom doubleheader. The Monarchs took Game 1 by a score of 4-3.
Senior
Anthony LoFaro (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) started the opener for Manhattanville (3-6, 1-1 MACF), going five innings and allowing three runs. Freshman
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) had two hits and two RBI's for the Valiants, while senior
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) and graduate student
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) each recorded a hit and scored a run.
Sophomore
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) went 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored in Game 2, and was one of three Valiants with multiple stolen bases, part of an eight-steal team effort. Senior
William Mohr (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) closed out the win with three scoreless innings.
GAME ONE: The Valiants jumped in front 2-0 in the top of third inning. After Lynch grounded out, Conklin singled to left, Gallagher reached on an error, and junior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) walked, loading the bases for Matero. The catcher wasted no time, putting the first pitch he saw into left field, scoring Conklin and Gallagher. Scoggins then stole third, putting runners on the corners with one out, but Pollack grounded into a double play to end the inning.
King's (4-6, 1-1 MACF) got one run back on a Dan Hartson double in RBI the bottom half of the inning. The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when Christian Pack's two-run single put King's up for the first time.
In the top of the sixth, after Pollack reached on a fielder's choice, sophomore
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) singled to right, sending Pollack to third, again putting runners on the corners with one out. Fellow sophomore
Ryan Ninivaggi (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Lehman), pinch hitting for Tebolt, plated Pollack to tie the game with a sacrifice fly to left field. In the bottom of the sixth, the Monarchs broke the tie when Bruce Breithaupt scored on a Sean Padden fielder's choice.
The Valiants went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, ending the opener.
GAME TWO: The Valiants again opened the scoring in the third, putting up a five-spot on just one hit. Tebolt walked to start the inning, then stole second before sophomore
Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up when Tebolt stole third and Merrill advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher. Lynch then reached on an infield single, scoring Tebolt. After both runners advanced on a balk, Merrill scored and Lynch advanced to third on a wild pitch. Conklin followed with a walk and stole second, with Lynch coming home on the throw down. After Gallagher and Scoggins both struck out swinging, Matero and Pollack both reached via a hit by pitch, loading the bases with two outs. Iannarilli followed with a walk, forcing home Conklin, and Matero later came in on the second wild pitch of the inning. Tebolt, in his second at-bat of the inning, flied out to left to end the inning.
After King's tied the game with two in the third and three in the fifth, Manhattanville responded with six in the sixth on six hits, with six different players (Iannarilli, freshman
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), Lynch, Conklin, Scoggins, Matero) each recording an RBI. Pollack was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole second, and scored on a double by Iannarilli. Shaffer, pinch-hitting, later doubled Iannarilli home, before leaving for pinch-runner
Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac). The junior scored on a single by Lynch, who later stole second, then scored on Conklin's base hit to right. After Gallagher doubled Conklin to third, Scoggins and Matero drove in both with a groundout and single to right, respectively. Mohr stranded four Monarchs on base over the final two innings to close out the win.
Manhattanville returns to GoValiants.com Field Tuesday for a 3:30 non-conference game with William Paterson.
