Baseball Falls to William Paterson on Late Inning Rally

PURCHASE, NY – A five-run ninth inning by William Paterson University capped a six-run comeback against the Manhattanville College baseball team Tuesday afternoon, as the Valiants dropped an 11-7 non-conference affair at Manhattanville Field.

Senior Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) and junior Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) each had three hits for Manhattanville (3-7), who took a 6-0 lead, and a combined no-hitter, to the sixth inning, before the Pioneers began their rally. Dan Carter had three hits and scored three times for William Paterson (10-5), while Carlos Perez, Anthony Hoagland, and Matt Ferrara each had two RBI's.

Senior Austin Pollack (Harrison, N.Y./) opened the scoring with a three-run double in the bottom of the third, scoring Scoggins, Gallagher, and senior Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Elementary). Scoggins and Gallagher both scored again in the bottom of the fifth on groundouts by freshman Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and sophomore Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South), respectively. Pollack also scored on a single by freshman Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk).

Three walks and a passed ball in the top of the sixth inning sparked a four-run frame for the Pioneers, who tied the game an inning later on another passed ball, and an RBI double by Perez.

Dan Carter's RBI double in the top of the ninth put William Paterson in front, as the Pioneers added four more despite not recording a hit after Carter's two bagger, courtesy of two walks, a hit batsman, and an error.

Gallagher led off the Manhattanville ninth with a single, then advanced to third when Scoggins reached on an error. After Matero drove in Gallagher with a groundout to the pitcher, Pollack reached on an error, leaving the Valiants one batter shy of bringing the tying run to the plate, but Iannarilli struck out and Shaffer grounded into a fielder's choice, ending the game.

The Valiants are back in action tomorrow on the road against Montclair State at 3:30. Follow live stats at govaliants.com/live.
