Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game on Walk-Off Wild Pitch

THROGGS NECK, NY – On a night featuring five wild pitches, it was the Manhattanville College baseball team who threw the final, and costliest one, falling to SUNY Maritime in 10 innings on Tuesday night, 4-3.

Manhattanville (7-11), in its first extra inning game in nearly two years, got two hits apiece from senior Austin Pollack (Harrison, N.Y./) and junior Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun), while sophomore Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) added an RBI and freshman Matthew Careccia (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) recorded his first collegiate hit in his first start of the season.

The Valiants put runners in scoring position multiple times in the early innings, twice courtesy of Pollack -- who had two singles and three stolen bases in his first two plate appearances -- but the team's 3-4-5 hitters were 0-for-5 in such situations through the first three innings.

Maritime (15-9) scored in the first, second, and fourth innings, carrying that 3-0 lead through seven innings backed by a combined shutout effort from Matthew Paghidas and Kyle Peterson.

In the top of the eighth, freshman Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) led off with a double down the left field line, and later moved to third on Kevin Dunn's first wild pitch of the inning. Pollack then walked, as Dunn's second wild pitch of the inning on ball four brought home Roper. A third wild pitch moved Pollack up to second, and after junior Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) popped out, Scoggins singled in Pollack and advanced to second on the throw. After sophomore Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) grounded out, Scoggins moved to third on Dunn's fourth wild pitch of the inning. Sophomore Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed with a game-tying RBI single. Junior pinch-runner Tom Gilmartin (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) then stole second, putting himself in scoring position, but freshman Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) grounded out to end the inning.

With runners on second and third and nobody out in the bottom of the 10th, sophomore Danny Meduri (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) struck out Antonio Diaz, but pinch-runner Matt Eng scored the game-winning run when Meduri threw a wild pitch the following batter.

The Valiants return to Manhattanville Field tomorrow afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch with the College of Staten Island.
