PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) homered twice and set a new school single-game record with nine runs batted in as the Manhattanville College softball team rallied for a 14-6 win in game two and a doubleheader split with New York University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.
Ventarola had a fantastic day at the plate for Manhattanville (11-11), going 4-for-6 with three homers and a double, 10 runs batted in and four runs scored in the two games, matching the school single-day record of 10 RBIs set by Janine Fortunato '06 on April 14, 2004 against the College of Mount St. Vincent. Junior
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) also had a perfect day at the plate as well, going 3-for-3 with a homer, double and two runs scored.
Game 1: NYU 5, Manhattanville 2
The Valiant offense was largely shut down in the first game of the day, as NYU scored five times in the final three innings to come back for a 5-2 win.
Graduate student
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and junior
Alexa Grniet (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) both had a team-high two hits in the game for the Valiants, while Ventarola homered and drove in one of the team's two runs along with freshman
Jordyn Boyd (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville).
Sophomore
Steph Muller (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) kept NYU off the scoreboard for the first four innings, striking out four and allowing only three hits, but the Violets struck for four runs on five hits in the fifth inning to take the lead. The Valiants got one run back in the seventh on a Boyd RBI single and brought the tying run to the plate, but could get no closer.
Muller suffered the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings. Freshman
Jasmine Feliciano (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) ceded one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
Game 2: Manhattanville 14, NYU 6 (5 inn.)
Game two was a completely different story for the Valiants, as Ventarola had the game of her career to lead a 13-hit attack in a 14-6 win. The senior's nine RBIs broke the previous record of eight, set by Casey Killard '07 on April 26, 2005 against Baruch College, while the two homers marked her first career multi-homer game.
In addition to Ventarola's monster outing, Hartenstein homered as part of a 3-for-3 game, while junior
Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) had two hits and scored twice. Boyd and sophomore
Sam Jedrey (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada) both added two RBIs as well in the win.
Manhattanville needed just two batters to grab an early lead in game two, as freshman
Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) singled to lead off the first and then trotted home on Ventarola's first long ball. After a Ventarola sac fly put the home team up 3-0 after two, the Valiants followed with six more runs via the long ball in the third inning. After the first two batters were retired, Boyd and Hartenstein launched back-to-back homers, and then two walks and a single set the stage for Ventarola, who crushed a grand slam to right center.
Leading 9-6 entering the bottom of the fifth, Manhattanville ended the game early with five more runs. Ventarola broke the school record with a two-run double to start the rally, while a two-run single from Jedrey and a Boyd RBI single helped to clinch the victory.
Hartenstein picked up the win in the circle for Manhattanville, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings.
Manhattanville will return to MAC Freedom play on Saturday, as the Valiants host Wilkes University for two big conference clashes at Manhattanville Field beginning at 1 p.m.
