Softball Secures Key MAC Freedom Sweep of Wilkes

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team scored the final 15 runs of the day after spotting Wilkes University the first two in game one, cruising to a 7-2 and 8-0 (5 inn.) sweep of the Lady Colonels in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.

Graduate student Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) paced the offensive attack for Manhattanville (13-11, 5-3 MAC Freedom) going 4-for-5 with a homer, four runs batted in and three runs scored. Freshman Brooke Franson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) also drove in four runs for the Valiants, with Diemicke and Franson also accounting for two of Manhattanville's four home runs on the day.

Game 1: Manhattanville 7, Wilkes 2

After spotting Wilkes a two-run lead in the top of the first, senior Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) settled into a groove and the Valiant offense scored the final seven runs of the game in a 7-2 victory.

Feeney shut down Wilkes after one mistake in the first inning, allowing only six hits and two runs in the complete-game win. The senior struck out a career-high 11 Lady Colonels on the day, recording at least one punch-out in every inning to move into a tie for sixth place on the school's single-game list.

Diemicke led the Valiants at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) drove in a team-high three runs with a homer and sophomore Sam Jedrey (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada) also had a pair of hits for the home team.

Down by two runs after half an inning, Manhattanville got one run back in the second and two more in the third to quickly regain the lead. Franson laced an RBI triple to right-center to score Jedrey from first in the second stanza, while juniors Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) plated one each in the third.

Manhattanville secured its advantage with four runs in the fourth, with the big blow a Torres three-run homer that followed a Diemicke RBI two-bagger.

Game 2: Manhattanville 8, Wilkes 0 (5 inn.)

Three Valiants went yard in the second game of the day, which was more than enough offense for Hartenstein, who silenced the Lady Colonels in an 8-0 victory.

Seven of Manhattanville's eight runs came via the long ball in game two, including six runs in the second inning. After junior Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) started off the game with an RBI double in the first inning, Franson and Diemicke both launched three-run homers in the second stanza to widen the margin. Buboi gave the Valiants an eight-run edge with a solo shot in the fourth.

Hartenstein certainly did not need all the offense, as she scattered five hits and struck out three in the five-inning victory. Only one batter reached scoring position for Wilkes (17-11, 4-6 MAC Freedom) in the game, as Hartenstein allowed only two balls to reach the outfield and none after the opening inning.

Manhattanville is scheduled to play the next 10 games away from Manhattanville Field, beginning with a MAC Freedom doubleheader at Delaware Valley University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
