PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led all players with eight goals and nine points to reach 200 points for her Valiant career as the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team got back on the winning track with a convincing 23-10 victory over Wilkes University on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Weiss had a huge game to lead the Valiants, matching her career high in both goals and points. Weiss' nine points give her 205 for her three-year Valiant career, making her the seventh player at Manhattanville to break the 200-point plateau. With 50 goals on the season, Weiss and freshman
Melissa O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) also become just the fifth set of teammates in school history to record 50 goals in the same season.
In addition, classmate
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) added six goals and nine draw controls for Manhattanville (7-5, 2-1 MAC Freedom) and freshman
Rosie DeBellis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) added two goals and three assists, while senior
Christina Leva (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) chipped in three goals and an assist.
DeBellis started the game with her first of the afternoon just 42 seconds into the contest, and the first three goals went the way of Manhattanville before the Lady Colonels got on the board after tallies from Leva and Weiss.
Wilkes got within one at 5-4 with 16:50 left in the half, but the Valiants came back with the next seven to take a commanding 12-4 lead with 4:11 remaining. Four of the seven goals came on free-position attempts, including three in a row from Leva and Weiss (twice). After Wilkes got two goals back, Weiss put a punctuation mark on her six-goal half with a score in the final 10 seconds.
After trading goals to start the second half, Nance scored three straight goals as part of a 5-0 run for the Valiants that extended the lead past 10 goals to 19-7 at the midway point of the half. Manhattanville outscored Wilkes 4-3 the rest of the way, including the second of the game from freshman
Bella Cosentino (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and the first from classmate
Grace D'Amico (Washington, Conn./The Gunnery) and senior
Jennifer Machin (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy).
For the game, Manhattanville was a perfect 7-for-7 from the eight-meter arc, led by three goals each from Nance and Weiss. The Valiants held a 41-25 edge in total shots on the afternoon as well.
Sophomore
Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) picked up the win between the pipes for the Valiants, making nine saves in the full 60 minutes of action.
The Valiants return to MAC Freedom play on Wednesday, travelling to Eastern University for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Eagles.
