CENTER VALLEY, PA – Eight unanswered runs from the DeSales Bulldogs capped a seven-run comeback as the Manhattanville College baseball team dropped a MAC Freedom contest Thursday afternoon, 12-10.
Manhattanville (7-8, 4-2 MACF) scored seven runs in the top of the second inning, but DeSales (13-9, 7-2 MACF) responded with three runs in both the third and seventh innings, and four in the fifth inning.
Sophomore
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBI's for the Valiants, while seniors
Austin Pollack (Harrison, N.Y./) and
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic), junior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun), and sophomore
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) all added two hits each. Sergio Diaz had two hits, three RBI's and two runs for the Bulldogs, while Preston Amato, Randal Pacchioli, and Conner Lafferty all added at least two hits and two RBI's apiece.
Nine straight Valiants reached base in the second inning, starting with a one-out single by senior
Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Elementary). Freshman
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) followed with a double, and Lynch singled both men home. Gallagher singled Lynch over to third, then stole second base, putting two runners in scoring position. Graduate student
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) followed with another two-run single, putting Manhattanville up 4-0. Junior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) reached on a bunt single, and an error allowed Conklin and Scoggins to both advance an extra base. After freshman
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) was hit by a pitch, Pollack singled to right field, moving everybody up 90 feet, scoring Scoggins. Iannarilli followed with the third two-run single of the inning, the sophomore's seventh straight game with an RBI.
A two-run double by Lafferty capped DeSales' three-run third, but the Valiants got one right back in the top of the fourth when Pollack doubled and Iannarilli followed with his third RBI of the day and 10
th in his last three games.
Lynch and Gallagher both scored their second runs of the game in the fifth, but DeSales put four on the board in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a Diaz two-run double, to close the gap to 10-8. The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, after Sean Hanczaryk tied the game with a double, Pacchioli singled home two, putting DeSales in front for the first time. Konner Schneider closed out the game, allowing just one baserunner in three innings of work.
The teams will close out the conference series Saturday with a doubleheader at Manhattanville Field. First pitch for Game 1 is slated for 1:00 p.m.
