Nance's Six Goals, Weiss' OT Tally Push Women's Lax Past King's, 13-12

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored the game-winning goal 54 seconds into overtime as the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team started off MAC Freedom play with a big 13-12 (OT) victory over King's (Pa.) College on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

The star of the game for Manhattanville (6-4, 1-0 MAC Freedom) was senior Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale), who led all players with a career-high six goals and also controlled the opening draw of overtime that led to the Valiant win. After gaining possession, a foul was whistled on King's that conceded a free-position attempt for Weiss, who buried the shot to end the contest.

In addition to Nance's six goals, Weiss scored twice with two assists for four points, in the process moving into third place on the school's career assists list (67) and eighth on the career goals list (128). Freshman Melissa O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) chipped in three goals on four shots and classmate Rosie DeBellis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) added two goals as well in the win.

Manhattanville went into halftime with a 7-5 lead thanks to three goals apiece from O'Mara and Nance. O'Mara put the visitors up for the first time after scoring twice in 14 seconds to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Valiants, and Nance finished off the half with two goals in 66 seconds to give Manhattanville its two-goal edge at the break.

The Valiants built up a three-goal lead twice early in the second half, but King's came back with four straight goals to take a 10-9 lead with 19:34 remaining. Manhattanville got back on top with two Nance goals sandwiched around a DeBellis tally, but the Lady Monarchs got two goals in the final two minutes to knot the score at 12 with 80 seconds remaining.

King's had a great chance to end the game in the final minute of regulation, but sophomore Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) came up huge by stopping Kendra McCoy on a free-position attempt, one of eight free-position shots turned aside by the sophomore on the afternoon. Marchiselli was a factor all game long for the Valiants, turning aside a career-high 18 saves – including 11 in the second half – to preserve the win.

Manhattanville will return to action on Wednesday, when the Valiants host preseason favorite FDU-Florham in a key MAC Freedom matchup at GoValiants.com Field beginning at 6 p.m.
