Men's Tennis has Solid Outing in First Home Match of Season

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The Manhattanville College men's tennis team continued its season today with its first home match in seven years. The Valiants took on a strong University of Scranton team Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Manhattanville Tennis Courts, but fell to the Royals, 6-3.

Sophomore Jan Senkerik (Zlin, Czech Republic/The Hill Academy) took on Tarquin McGurrin, but was unable to come away with a victory, falling in straight sets (6-1, 7-5). Junior Juan Huertas (Bogotá, Colombia/La Salle (H.S.) (Calif.)), fresh off his Player of the Week honors, competed in second singles, putting up a fight against Alexander Ochalski, but ultimately losing 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. In third singles, freshman Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) competed with Charles Swope, but also fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Junior Alex Fleischman (Riverside, Conn./King) was up in fourth singles, taking on Brian Harkins, and falling 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets. Freshman Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) got one of two singles victories for Manhattanville in fifth singles action, defeating Daniel Scala in a back-and-forth affair that saw a third set tiebreak. Crowley come away with a 6-1, 4-6, 12-10 victory. At sixth singles action for the Valiants, freshman Jaime Peredo (Uruapan, México/Instituto Morelos) defeated Adrian Maggiani in straight sets, coming away with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory.

In first doubles competition, Senkerik and Crowley went up against Scranton's Ochalski and McGurrin, but came up on the wrong end of an 8-3 score. Huertas and Schlapak were up in second doubles action, pairing up against Harkins and Swope, putting forth a strong effort but falling in a tightly contested 8-6 contest. In third doubles competition, Fleischman and freshman Nick Bongiorno put together a strong showing, defeating Liam King and Sal Sullivan in an 8-2 contest.

Following one day of rest, the Valiants are back in action this Friday, Sept. 21, when they are back on the road to take on Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., with a scheduled start time of 5:00 p.m.
