PURCHASE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College women's soccer team picked up its second victory of the season, Saturday afternoon, Sept. 22, as the Valiants defeated the visiting SUNY Maritime Privateers 3-0 at GoValiants.com Field.
Manhattanville (2-4-1) absolutely controlled the pace of play throughout the match, outshooting Maritime (0-4-0) 31-5, including 13-3 in shots on net. Things got started early for the Valiants, who jumped ahead 2-0 with goals in the seventh and 10th minutes of the game.
The first came from senior forward
Joanna Karp (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK), as she capitalized on traffic in front on the net after a corner for her first score of the season. Karp attempted the first shot, which was blocked by a Privateer defender, but the Plainview, N.Y., native jumped on her own rebound to convert and give Manhattanville the early lead. Just minutes later, Karp found herself in the action once again, setting up midfielder
Brigid Sullivan (Vienna, Va./Paul VI Catholic) perfectly. The assist was Karp's first of the season and the goal was the first of Sullivan's collegiate career.
Despite pushing the action for the remainder of the half, the score would remain 2-0 in favor the Valiants at the break. Less than 10 minutes into the second half, though, Manhattanville would get on the board once more. Playing close to the Maritime net, several Valiants would pass around in search of the perfect opportunity. Junior forward
Bella Beltrami (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), who has served as a goalkeeper for her entire career until Saturday's game, wound up with the ball in her possession. Beltrami found an open
Ashley Hayes (Springfield, Ore./Thurston), and the freshman defender would take a sharp shot from 10 yards out for the final score of the game and the first of her career.
Manhattanville returns to the pitch for another non-conference match Tuesday night, Sept. 25, at 6:00 p.m. at Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y., before opening Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play next Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1:00 p.m. in St. Davids, Pa., at Eastern University.
