POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- A late first-half strike from the host Vassar College Brewers held up as the lone goal of the match as the Manhattanville College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 non-conference matchup Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Gordon Field.
The Valiants (1-1) and Brewers (3-0) both turned up the defensive intensity early on, as the two sides combined for just eight shots total, two of them on goal, in the opening 40 minutes. In the 42nd minute, from a header pass off a throw-in, Vassar's Quinn Tunnell beat reigning Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Charles Roberts (Brown Mills, N.J./Pemberton Township). Tunnell's goal was the final shot of the half for either team.
Manhattanville managed six shots in the final 21 minutes, including three on goal in the 75th minute, 80th minute and 90th minute, but Vassar goalkeeper Will Marment stopped all three, including the last-minute attempt from freshman
Daniel Lombardo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd). Roberts finished with five saves for the Valiants.
Manhattanville concludes its season-opening road trip this weekend at the St. Joseph's College (Long Island) Tournament. The Valiants play the host Golden Eagles Saturday, Sept. 8 and the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears Sunday, Sept. 9. Both matches are scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m.
