Pijaca's 38 Saves Not Enough as Women's Hockey Drops Tough Matchup With No. 1 Elmira

RYE, N.Y. — The Manhattanville College women's hockey team, facing off with No. 1 ranked Elmira College, dropped a 2-0 decision to the Soaring Eagles Saturday, Jan. 12 at Playland Ice Casino in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play.

The game remained scoreless until late in the first period, when Elmira (12-2-1, 8-0-0 UCHC) broke through on the power play. Forward Katie Granato fired a shot from the top of the right circle that beat Manhattanville (9-5-2, 6-3-1 UCHC) goaltender Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

There were many opportunities throughout the second period with both teams receiving power play opportunities, but neither team was able to break through.

In the third, Elmira pushed hard to extend their lead, but Pijaca stopped everything that came her way. The senior made 20 saves in the period to keep the Valiants in the game and kept the Elmira lead at 1-0, but Manhattanville was unable to break through against Elmira goalie Stephanie Martin, who made 16 saves on the day. The Eagles would add an empty-net goal in the final seconds of regulation to give them the 2-0 victory.

Senior Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Northwood School) led all Valiants skaters with five shots on goal, and Pijaca made 38 saves on 39 shots faced, bringing her save percentage to .938 on the year and lowering her goals against average to 1.65.

The Valiants return to the ice Tuesday, Jan. 15, when they continue their nine game homestand against Trinity College (Conn.), with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
