Men’s Basketball Falls to Wesleyan on the Road

MIDDLETOWN, CONN. – The Manhattanville College men's basketball team suffered a tough non-conference road loss Wednesday night, Jan. 2, at Wesleyan University by a score of 99-62.

The Valiants (6-7) started off on the wrong foot versus the Cardinals (8-3), falling behind 10-0 in the first two and a half minutes, and were unable to recover for the remainder of the contest. Wesleyan eventually took the 49-21 lead into halftime, before defeating Manhattanville by a larger margin.

Individually, the Valiants were once again led by sophomore Sean Smith, Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart) The reigning Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Player of the Week led Manhattanville and was the game's second-highest scorer with 19 points, but was the only Valiant to notch more than six points. Smith also added five rebounds, an assist and a steal in 29 minutes on the floor.

Rookie forward Connor Yetman (Sydney, Australia/The Scots College (H.S.)) was strong on the boards for Manhattanville and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go with four points. Fellow first-year player Petey Galgano (New Rochelle, N.Y./Wilbraham & Monson Academy (Mass.)) also had a nice all-around night and finished with six points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals. Freshman forward Chris Brown (Miami, Fla./Coral Gables Senior), who is tied for third in the MAC Freedom with 1.4 blocks per game, picked up another two blocks to go with five points, four rebounds and two steals in 21 minutes off the bench. Junior Cory Madden (Woodside, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy Memorial) chipped in six points, three steals and a rebound as well.

The Valiants will take a six-day break before returning to the court and MAC Freedom action next Wednesday night, Jan. 9. Manhattanville will host King's College (Pa.) at Kennedy Gymnasium in Purchase, N.Y., for the first half of a men's/women's doubleheader, beginning with the men at 6:00 p.m.
