MADISON, N.J. – Senior forward
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) registered a double-double, with 21 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, but the Manhattanville College women's basketball team was defeated 62-57 by Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham Wednesday night, Jan. 23, in a road Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest.
The Valiants (13-4, 4-3 MACF) had three players score in double figures, led by McGuire, who also notched five steals. She was joined by rookie
Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School), who had a tough day shooting but still managed a season-best 19 points and six boards while fellow first-year Valiants
Jykayla Elting (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) nearly notched her first-career double-double has she finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Three players scored in double-figures for the Red Devils (7-11, 2-5 MACF).
FDU-Florham held a 38-17 advantage over Manhattanville at the half, but the Valiants regrouped in the third quarter and trimmed the Red Devils lead to just five heading into the final quarter at 51-46. McGuire and Mikaele combined for 16 of the 19 points that quarter on 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line. Manhattanville started the fourth on a roll, using an 8-3 run to tie the game at 54-54 with just 2:34 remaining. Unfortunately, FDU-Florham closed out the contest with an 8-3 run of its own to come away with the conference victory.
The Valiants will look to rebound from the loss this weekend when they host Delaware Valley University in the first half of a home MAC Freedom doubleheader Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, at the Kennedy Gymnasium in Purchase, N.Y. Manhattanville tips off against the Aggies at 1:00 p.m. as it looks to sweep the season series over DelVal following a Dec. 5 road win, 70-59, in Doylestown, Pa.
