OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team picked up its 10th straight victory on Tuesday night, Oct. 1, defeating Skyline Conference foe The College at Old Westbury in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-7). The Valiants are currently riding the second-longest winning streak in program history, bested only by a perfect 12-match run in the 1985 season.
Sophomore
Alejandra Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) led the way for the Crimson and White (12-4, 3-0 Skyline) against the Panthers (5-4, 1-2 Skyline), as the outside hitter led all players with 10 kills on an efficient 20 swings with just one error (.450) to go with seven digs, three aces and an assist. Fellow outside senior
Austen Brauer (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) was nearly as efficient as she notched nine kills on 16 hits (.375).
Reigning Skyline Rookie of the Week setter
Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro) was also featured and led all players in both assists (27) and digs (13) to go along with her three aces as well as four kills on five hits with no errors (.800). Fellow rookie libero
Geena Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) finished with nine digs, five assists and three aces. Torres, Vital and Figueroa's totals of three aces led all players.
As a team, Manhattanville was extremely efficient hitting the ball. The squad finished with 36 kills and 10 errors on 73 swings (.356), while holding Old Westbury to a -.027 hitting percentage.
The Valiants will return to the court Friday night, Oct. 4, in Montclair, N.J., for a 7:00 p.m. road non-conference match at Montclair State University. Manhattanville and the Red Hawks have played 15 times, with the Valiants winning just twice, but as recently as 2017. The squad will look to extend its winning streak to 11 at the end of this week against its tough out-of-conference opponent.
