MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team, riding the second-best winning streak in program history at 10 matches in a row, unfortunately saw its run snapped in a non-conference contest Friday night, Oct. 4, by a score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-7, 25-21) at Montclair State University.
The Valiants (12-5) fought hard all night long against the Red Hawks (13-4), giving the home team fits in the first and third sets. Unfortunately, MSU took both of those tight games, along with the second set as well.
In the first set, the Crimson and White found themselves down by 10 points on several occasions, as late as 19-9, but were able to claw their way back to within four points at 22-18 thanks to kills from rookies Hannah Pena,
Felicity Hoffert (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) and
Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro), as well as six Red Hawk errors. Following an MSU timeout, however, the home squad ended up swinging momentum back in its favor and won three of the final four points to take the set.
The third game was very similar, as the Valiants were down by at most seven points on a few occasions. Manhattanville was eventually able to work its way back to a three-point set at 23-20 thanks to a 5-1 run that included three kills from senior
Austen Brauer (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings), as well as one by Pena and an ace from sophomore
Kiera Charpentier (Mansfield, Conn./EO Smith). Montclair State ended up winning two of the final three points, though, and claimed the match victory.
Highlights:
- Bauer led all Valiants with 10 kills.
- Hoffert finished with five kills, while Pena had three.
- Vital ended the night with a team-high 20 assists, six digs, two aces and two kills.
- Freshman Geena Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) led all players with 12 digs to go with a pair of assists. Sophomore Emily Gonzalez (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) dug out seven balls of her own as well.
- Sophomore Alejandra Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) chipped in nine digs and a pair of kills on the night.
The squad returns to action, as well as Skyline Conference play, this Monday night, Oct. 7, at home in Purchase, N.Y. The Valiants look to get back to their winning ways in a 7:00 p.m. match against Maritime College at Kennedy Gymnasium. Manhattanville has faced the Privateers 13 times, winning each match and never even dropping a set.
