PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team kicked of its 2019-20 season with a large win against Wells College. The Valiants topped the Express 90-32 only letting them score four points in the first quarter on Friday, Nov. 15.
The Crimson and White (1-0) totaled 25 points in the first quarter controlling both ends of the court. Junior
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) opened up the season causing a turnover and taking a breakaway layup in the starting minutes of the game. Shore ended the first with seven points. Sophomore
Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) checked into the game halfway throughout the quarter and put up eight points, one assist and jagged one steal.
The Valiants only allowed the Express (0-3) to score a total of 10 points in the first half. Five steal were made by Manhattanville, Johnson-Desilvia made 2, freshman Lauren Krystal had one as well as junior
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) and Shore. Freshman
Madison Fields (Grantsville, Utah/Grantsville) stood out in her debut game as she notched six points in the second quarter totaling 10 out of the 51 points scored in the first half.
In the third, junior
Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) and freshman
London Scott (Farmers Branch, Texas/Newman Smith) had four rebounds each. Fields had another six points and ended her first game with 16 as well as three rebounds and two blocks.
Johnson-Desilvia started the fourth off with a steal and following with a layup. Krystall and freshman
Julia Torreso (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) were the only ones to sinks three in the final quarter. Seven steals were made by Manhattanville and three of those caused turnovers converted into scoring opportunities.
The Valiants totaled 20 steals against Wells, four of them were made by Johnson-Desilvia and sophomore
Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) while Coutu followed with three. Johnson-Desilvia also lead Manhattanville in points and assists with 18 and four respectively. Pemberton finished with a three-point average of .667, 12 rebounds, six points and one block. Many Valiants got in on the team win as 19 of the 90 points scored were assisted.
The team will continue to play at home on Tuesday, Nov. 19 as they open up Skyline Conference play against Yeshiva University. The Valiants will host the Maccabees in Kennedy Gym at 7:00 p.m.
