Women's Hockey Remains Undefeated in UCHC After OT Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Manhattanville College women's ice hockey team won its fifth United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game of the season today, Saturday, Nov. 23. The Valiants beat the Cougars of Chatham Universtiy 1-0 in overtime after co-captains senior Zoe Pellowitz and junior Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) assisted on senior Amanda Sabia's (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery) game-winner. Senior netminder Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Man./Canadian International Hockey Academy) also finished with a season-high 35 saves in the shutout, the second of her career.

Sabia took the first shot for the Valiants' (5-2-1,5-0 UCHC) but it was saved by Cougar (2-4-2, 1-3-1 UCHC) goalie Katy Reed. After Chatham won the next faceoff, sophomore Ana Tittman and Pellowitz took back-to-back shots. Tittman's shot was saved by Reed, while Pellowitz' was blocked by the Cougar defense. Chatham responded to the Valiants' two shots by taking two of their own. Elias saved the first shot and sophomore Laney Nash (Edmonds, Wash./Washington Wild (PNAHA)) blocked the other.

Manhattanville's senior Janet Xu (Edmonton, Alta./Ontario Hockey Academy) and Sabia won the next two faceoffs taken on the ice. After Sabia won the faceoff, she took back-to-back shots, having one saved and the other blocked. The Valiants took nine shots and Elias totaled nine saves in the first period.

Five penalties were given out in the second period and three of them were powerplay opportunities for the Valiants. During the first power play, Manhattanville took three shots but all were saved by Reed. On the next power play, the Valiants once again took three shots, but Reed again stopped them all. When Chatham had the advantage, Elias made three saves of her own. She ended the second period with 15 saves.

Lopes took four shots in the third and five other Valiants took two apiece to try and win the game in regulation. Manhattanville took 18 shots but none were able to get by the Cougars defense. Elias made 11 saves to keep the score blanked and send the game into overtime. Chatham started the overtime period on a powerplay, but the Valiants defense was too strong and did not allow a show. After Xu won the last faceoff of the game, Pellowitz and Lopes lined Sabia up for the game-winning goal.

The Valiants will return home next and host Connecticut College. They will play the Camels on Nov. 30 at 3:00 p.m.
