RYE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College women's hockey team defeated United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opponent Alvernia University, Saturday, Nov. 9, at home in the Playland Ice Casino. The 7-2 victory was their first of the season.
The Valiants started the game slowly, but eventually heated up. Alvernia (2-1, 0-1 UCHC) recorded the only goal of the first period. They took a 1-0 advantage into the first intermission despite being outshot by Manhattanville (1-1-1, 1-0 UCHC) 13-4 in the period.
The Crimson and White came out swinging in the second period of play. Their first goal came from senior forward Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery) who stole the puck from Alvernia in the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway opportunity to tie the game at one. The star of the period was junior forward Adelle Clark (Lantzville, B.C./Ontario Hockey Academy) who scored two goals including one on the powerplay.
Manhattanville entered the third period with a 5-1 lead and was able to extend that lead in the final 20 minutes. The Valiants saw two more goals in the period. Junior forward Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) scored on a goal assisted by Sabia and senior forward Brayden James (Denton, Texas/Dallas Stars Elite (EHL)) and junior forward Taylor Ham (Saugerties, N.Y./Millbrook School) scored her second goal of the game with sophomore defender Holly Meredith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Vermont Academy) picking up the assist. In total five different Valiants scored with Clark and Ham leading the way with two goals apiece.
The Valiants return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 10, against UCHC opponent Stevenson University at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, N.Y. at 3:00 P.M.
