Stalwart Defense, Persistent Offensive Pressure Key 1-0 UCHC Women's Hockey Win

PITTSBURGH, PA – It took more than 51 minutes for a team to score, but with 8:21 to play in regulation, Manhattanville College women's hockey senior Morgan Wilm (West Chester, Pa./Millbrook School) scored the lone goal of the night as the Valiants held on to beat the Chatham University Cougars 1-0 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action Friday, Feb. 15, from the Frozen Pond Arena.

15-7-2 (11-5-1 UCHC) dominated in almost every facet of the game except the scoreboard, outshooting Chatham (7-17, 4-13 UCHC) 32-8, winning 25 of 44 faceoffs during the game; the Valiants took at least 10 shots in every period and did not allow more than four shots from the Cougars in any period; sophomore Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) nearly outshot the Cougars by herself, finishing the night with seven shots.

Manhattanville senior goalie Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) and Chatham's Devon Strachan combined to stop the first 34 shots of the night before Wilm found the back of the net off an assist from junior Brayden James (Denton, Texas/Dallas Stars Elite (EHL)) at 11:39 of the third period. Wilm's goal marked her second in her last two games, following her shorthanded goal during Senior Day last Saturday, Feb. 9.

The teams managed just five shots the rest of the way, four coming from Manhattanville. Chatham pulled Strachan with 1:17 to play, but couldn't muster a single shot over those final 77 seconds.

With the win, Manhattanville moved ahead of Nazareth and into a tie with William Smith for second in the UCHC standings, with the top two seeds earning a bye to the semifinals of the upcoming conference tournament. Manhattanville, William Smith, and Nazareth will finish second, third, and fourth in the final conference standings. Which teams finish in which spots will be determined over the next two days.

Manhattanville wraps up the regular season tomorrow, Feb. 16, with a 3 p.m. puck drop against Chatham, while William Smith and Nazareth open their two-game UCHC series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
