EDGEWATER, N.J. – The Manhattanville College men's tennis team completed its second match in two days to begin the spring season Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24, but suffered a tough loss with a shorthanded lineup on the road at future Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University by a score of 6-3.
Doubles got underway first and, after dropping the first flight match, the Valiants' No. 2 and 3 pairs put up competitive efforts, but the duos of junior
Alex Fleischman (Riverside, Conn./King) and freshman
Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) and rookies
Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) and Nick Borden, respectively, each fell 8-4.
In singles play, despite dropping the first two matches at third and sixth singles to officially fall in the match, the Valiants won three of the final four to close out the afternoon on a high note. The first individual match win of the spring since the program's reinstatement went to Fleischman, who topped his Macabee foe in three tough sets, 4-6, 6-4 and 10-8 in the tiebreak. Fellow junior
Juan Huertas (Bogotá, Colombia/La Salle (H.S.) (Calif.)) was next to finish at No. 1 singles and topped his opponent from Yeshiva in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. Schlapak was the last Valiant to emerge victorious as the rookie bested his opposition in two hard-fought sets as well, 7-6, 6-3.
