Women's Hockey Dominates Senior Day, 5-1; Turco Picks Up 100th WIn

RYE, N.Y. – Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Northwood School) and Morgan Wilm (West Chester, Pa./Millbrook School) both scored on their senior days and fellow senior Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) stopped 24 of 25 shots as the Manhattanville College women's hockey team earned a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over the Nazareth College Golden Flyers on Saturday, Feb. 9, winning by a score of 5-1.

Mensi scored twice, while Wilm, junior Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride (JWHL)) and sophomore Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) each scored once for Manhattanville (14-7-2, 10-5-1 UCHC), as head coach David Turco earned his 100th career win.

Just 3:08 into the game, Mensi, in front of hundreds of friends and family, sent Playland Ice Casino into a frenzy with her 16th goal of the season, knocking in the rebound of a shot from junior Ali Howard (Rye, N.Y./Rye). Just past the midway point of the period, Lopes turned a Nazareth (18-4-1, 12-4 UCHC) turnover into a 2-0 Valiants lead.

Pellowitz made it 3-0 on the power play at the 15:07 mark of the second period, blasting a slapshot that was initially slowed, but eventually snuck its way through the five-hole of Nazareth goalie Adrianna Brehm.
Mensi added another power play goal at 4:12 of the third period, and Wilm, moments after blocking a Nazareth shot, added a shorthanded goal at 5:52 for a 5-0 lead. Jessica Kollberg spoiled Pijaca's shutout attempt, getting the Golden Flyers on the board at 12:46.

Before the game, Pijaca, Wilm, Mensi, and Ellis Smith (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara Junior Purple Eagles (WNYAHL)) were all honored for their contributions to the program. Smith had a breakaway opportunity in the third, seeking her first collegiate goal, but Briehm denied her attempt.

The Valiants wrap up the regular season next weekend at the Chatham University Cougars, starting Friday, Feb. 15, with a 7:10 puck drop.
