MONTCLAIR, NJ – Down 5-0 after three innings and 6-3 entering the top of the ninth, the Manhattanville College baseball team rallied, but ultimately fell to the Montclair State University Red Hawks 8-7 in 10 innings Tuesday, March 19.
Senior

Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) each had two hits for Manhattanville (4-5) and sophomore
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) added his first home run of the season, while driving in two runs, as did junior

The Red Hawks plated five runs on just two hits in the second and third innings, but Roper quickly got one of the runs back, tripling to lead off the third, then scoring on a failed pickoff attempt.
The score remained 5-1 into the seventh when Scoggins singled with one out, setting the stage for Matero, who took the seventh pitch of his at-bat over the wall in right field, halving Montclair State's lead to 5-3. The Red Hawks tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth, pushing their lead back to 6-3.
Scoggins led off the top of the ninth with a double, then advanced to third on a groundout. Junior

Johnny Mariano (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and putting the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.
After falling behind 1-2, junior
Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) put the visitors in front for the first time all game with a double to right-center, scoring Feinstein and Merrill. The Valiants' lead was short-lived, however, as Martinez led off the Montclair State ninth with a game-tying home run.
In the bottom of the tenth, after a leadoff double and sacrifice bunt put the winning run on third with one out, Kyle Forcini delivered the walk-off single for the Red Hawks.
The Valiants will head back down to New Jersey tomorrow, Wednesday March 20 for a 3:30 first pitch against the William Paterson University Pioneers.
