13-Hit Attack Not Enough for Baseball Against Western Connecticut State

PURCHASE, NY – The Manhattanville College baseball team received multi-hit performances from four different players, but it was not enough as the Western Connecticut State University Colonials knocked off the Valiants 16-6 in non-conference action Wednesday, March 27 from Manhattanville Field.

Senior Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had three hits and reached base four times, sophomore Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) had two hits and three RBI's, and the freshmen middle infield duo of Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and Johnny Mariano (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) each had two hits for Manhattanville (6-8). Junior Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) finished 1-for-2 with two RBI's while senior Michael Poggioreale (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) and freshman Brian Alberts (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Prep) each had a hit and scored a run. Greg Campbell had four hits and four RBIs for Western Connecticut (2-12).

Merrill put the Valiants up 2-1 with a two-run double in the bottom of the first, scoring Corrigan and Quatrochi. After two walks loaded the bases, Mariano singled up the middle, scoring Merrill, putting Manhattanville up 3-1. The Colonials put five on the board in the top of the second, seizing a 6-3 lead they held until the bottom of the fifth.

Quatrochi and Poggioreale opened the Manhattanville fifth with back-to-back singles. With one out, Alberts reached on an infield single, loading the bases, which Tuite unloaded with a two-out double to right-center, tying the game at six.

Western Connecticut responded with a seven-run sixth inning, grabbing a commanding 13-6 lead. The Colonials tacked on three more in the top of the seventh. The Valiants put men on base in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, but were unable to bring any of them around.

On the mound, senior Francisco Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and junior Liam Sarna (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) each threw a scoreless inning of relief, while sophomore Rob McGuinness (New Hyde Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) needed just four pitches to get through a perfect top of the eighth.

The Valiants return to MAC Freedom play in the opener of their three-game series with the Delaware Valley University Aggies Friday, March 29, from Manhattanville Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
