Four-Run Sixth, Six-Run Seventh Key MAC Freedom Baseball Comeback Over Delaware Valley

PURCHASE, NY – The Manhattanville College baseball team put 10 runs on the board across the sixth and seventh innings Friday, March 29, rallying from three runs down for an 11-5 win over the Delaware Valley University Aggies in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom series opener from Manhattanville Field.

Junior Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had a key three-run triple and finished with a game-high four RBI's for Manhattanville (7-8, 4-2 MACF). Sophomore Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored -- including a home run --, junior Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and sophomore Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) finished with a combined three runs, three hits and three RBI's, and junior Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) finished with two RBI's and made a highlight-reel catch for the Valiants. Troy Lachenmayer and Ryan Schuetrumpf each had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for Delaware Valley (6-12, 2-5 MACF).

A pair of two-out errors led to two unearned runs and a 4-0 lead for Delaware Valley entering the bottom of the fourth, but Matero started the Manhattanville rally with a no-doubt-about-it bomb to right-center.
In the bottom of the sixth, a walk and two hit batsmen loaded the bases with one out. After Iannarilli drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Roper reached on an error to re-load the bases. Tebolt promptly unloaded the bases and shot Manhattanville out in front 5-4 with a three-bagger to left-center, just beating the relay throw.

With two out in the top of the seventh, after the Aggies tied things up at five, Merrill, who had come on to play first base earlier that inning, ended the frame catching a pop-up from the seat of his pants after being knocked down by the Aggies' Luke Hendricks, receiving a thunderous reaction from the Manhattanville faithful for his efforts.

The score didn't remain tied for long, as six straight Valiants reached base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, including a bases loaded walk to sophomore Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), and a pair of run-scoring singles by Iannarilli and Roper that put Manhattanville up 8-5. After Tebolt made it 9-5 with a sacrifice fly, Merrill missed a three-run homer by a few feet, doubling off the base of the 405-foot sign in dead center, scoring Roper and Iannarilli.

Junior Danny Meduri (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) earned the win, allowing just one hit over the final 2.2 innings, his longest outing in his last 17 appearances as a Valiant.

The teams wrap up their MAC Freedom series with a doubleheader in Doylestown, Pa. tomorrow, March 30. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
