DOYLESTOWN, PA. – The Manhattanville College baseball team picked up two more victories over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Delaware Valley University Saturday afternoon, March 30, to complete the series sweep over the Aggies and vault its overall record over the .500 mark.
The Valiants (9-8, 6-2 MACF) currently sit in second place in the conference standings after having played eight MAC Freedom games after their series sweep of Delaware Valley (6-13, 2-7 MACF). Pitching was the name of the game in the Quaker state Saturday as junior
Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) and sophomore
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) each pitched a pair of 5.0+ inning gems, allowing a combined three earned runs. The former struck out seven Aggies in 5.2 innings and allowed just five hits, three walks and a pair of earned runs to improve to 4-0, while the latter tossed 5.1 innings and gave up one earned run on five hits and one walk with a strikeout.
Manhattanville took game one 13-4 and doubled the home squad's hit total. The Valiants began with three runs in the top of the first. Junior
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) reached in the leadoff spot on an error at short, followed by a single from classmate
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay). After a pair of strikeouts, junior
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) knocked in two win a double to right center, followed by an RBI single down the leftfield line from Shaffer. The following half inning, Matero stepped to the plate once again, this time with two outs, and jacked his third homer of the season to make it 4-0.
Things stayed that way until the Aggies scratched on across in the home half of the third, but the Valiants got that one back, plus one more, in the top of the fifth. Rookie
Zachary Feinstein (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) entered the game as a pinch hitter with no outs and the bases loaded. He sent a long fly ball to left for the sacrifice fly to plate Iannarilli. Later in the inning, Lynch hit an RBI infield single to second and Shaffer was able to make it across the plate safely to make it 6-1.
Manhattanville exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth thanks to a double steal by Iannarilli and senior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun), followed by an RBI single from sophomore
Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell). Lynch eventually cleared the bases with a three-run double to right center as well. Delaware Valley got one more in the next half inning, but the Valiants got two more in the top of the seventh. Rookie
Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) hit a one-run double to center after entering the game as a pinch hitter, while classmate
Johnny Mariano (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester), who entered early in the inning as a pinch hitter, eventually scored on a passed ball. The Aggies scratched two more across in the next half inning, but that was it.
Game two was more of the same as the Valiants kicked it off with five runs in the top of the first. Senior
Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) began with a one-out RBI double to center to plate Matero, followed by an RBI single from Iannarilli. Junior
Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) eventually knocked in a two-run single of his own before classmate
Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) closed out the scoring with an RBI single to left center to plate Tebolt.
Things stayed quiet until the top of the fourth when Manhattanville scored four more. Iannarilli hit a two-out single to left center to plate Matero, followed by a one-run single from Roper the next at-bat. After the latter stole second, sophomore
Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) hit an infield single to first and Roper and Iannarilli managed to score on the play. The Valiants closed out their scoring with five more runs in the top of the sixth. Tuite began with a bases loaded walk, and Silvestri followed suit after getting hit by a pitch. With one out, Lynch drew another bases loaded walk to make it 12-0 before sophomore
Matthew Careccia (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) singled to left for an RBI. Corrigan closed out the scoring with a sac fly to left to plate Silvestri.
Manhattanville will return to the field tomorrow afternoon, March 31, in St. Davids, Pa., to make up the final game of the series at Eastern University. First pitch against the Eagles is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
