No. 12 Softball Suffers First Loss of Season at Home to No. 10 Ithaca

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team, ranked No. 12 in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Top 25 poll, faced off with its toughest opponent of the season so far Sunday afternoon, March 31. The Valiants fell to 10th ranked Ithaca College by a score of 8-0 in six innings. The two squads did not officially play the second half of the doubleheader, with game two being called after one inning due to poor field conditions following a rain-filled game one.

The Valiants (16-1) and Bombers (10-4-1) stayed scoreless through the first inning, as the early part of the game was played through a light drizzle. Ithaca struck first when the Bombers' Daniella Mulvey hit a slow roller to short and was able to beat the throw to first and allow a run to score from second.

Manhattanville's best scoring change of the game came in the home half of the second when sophomore Jordyn Boyd (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) reached base following a one-out double to left center. Senior Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) followed with a single up the middle and there were runners on the corners. Sophomore Brooke Franson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) drew a five-pitch walk two at-bats later and loaded the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, the Valiants were unable to capitalize and stranded all three runners.

As the rain and wind picked up, neither squad was able to break through until Ithaca put four runs up in the top of the fourth on a pair of home runs. They then scored two more on a two-run, one-out single in the top of the fifth as well before scoring their eighth run of the game in the top of the sixth on a two-out double to close out the scoring for the game.

Highlights:
  • Rookie Giovanna Liggett (Fountain Valley, Calif./Edison) went 1-for-2 and drew a walk.
  • Boyd was also 1-for-2 with a double and walk.
  • Chapalone went 1-for-2 as well.
Manhattanville will return to the field for another non-conference doubleheader this Tuesday afternoon, April 2, against future Skyline Conference opponent the College of Mount Saint Vincent. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
